Are You Maximizing Your Social Security Disability Checks?
You know all too well how difficult it can be to receive approval for Social Security disability, but you managed to secure benefits. That said, are you making the most of your regular checks?
U.S. News & World Report offers tips on stretching your benefits. See how to get every dollar that you deserve while adjusting to this new chapter of your life.
Take Advantage of The Trial Work Period
Because the Social Security Administration occasionally revisits disability cases to see if recipients still qualify for benefits, you should keep the administration updated of your current medical status. You are not promised benefits for the rest of your life, so be sure to report any changes in your medical condition and general ability to work. The SSA offers a trial work period, wherein you work, when your disability allows, and continue receiving benefits. There is a threshold for how much you can earn and continue to qualify for benefits, so be sure that you educate yourself on the most recent limit.
Look Into Additional Government Assistance
If you either cannot yet return to work in any capacity or are unlikely to be able to work again, look into other forms of government assistance. For example, you may qualify for food assistance from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. You may also qualify to receive a free cellphone or landline. The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program helps with energy costs. Also, you could be eligible for affordable housing or transportation assistance.
Do not take your disability benefits for granted. Take steps to improve your financial health while taking care of your physical health.
